No Need to Travel: How to Learn a Language Immersively Without Leaving Home
Let’s face it—immersive learning is hands-down the fastest way to pick up a foreign language. But here’s the catch: most people do it wrong. In past articles, I’ve gone over common “methods,” and honestly, a lot of them are not just inefficient—they can even hold you back.
The Traps of Learning a Foreign Language: 5 Methods That Seem Effective but Actually Aren’t
When it comes to learning a foreign language, immersive learning is generally considered very effective—and that’s true in theory. But in practice, many people implement it poorly.
So, in this post, I’ll share some immersion techniques that actually work. And spoiler: you don’t need to go abroad to make them work.
I’ve managed to get fluent in French without ever setting foot in France, and my English hit C1 level long before I ever traveled internationally. Meanwhile, some people live in Australia for years but still struggle with English, and others spend ages in South America but can’t get Spanish to stick.
The takeaway? Going abroad isn’t what matters. The key is using the right methods.
These strategies are flexible, independent, and completely doable on your own—no teachers, friends, or online “language buddies” required.
1. Use AI to Practice Listening and Speaking
AI tools like ChatGPT can help you practice speaking and listening. I’ve written before about how to use AI for learning languages.
Master a Foreign Language for Free with AI: How ChatGPT Can Transform Your Speaking and Listening Skills
Ever thought about practicing a foreign language without needing a partner or a class? Here’s a simple, free way to use AI — specifically ChatGPT — to create a realistic environment for practicing speaking and listening skills. It’s super convenient for language learners, and it won’t cost you a dime!
If you’re in China, you’ll need a VPN to access ChatGPT. Check out my other guide if you’re unsure how to set it up.
AI tools are super effective. I use them for German and French myself, and I can’t recommend them enough.
No VPN? No problem—there are plenty of ways to practice without AI. I learned French years ago using these exact methods.
2. Boost Your Listening with Video Content
Don’t just passively watch TV shows. Actively listen.
Find resources on Netflix, YouTube, Bilibili, TikTok, or Xiaohongshu—preferably with accurate subtitles. Download them and listen offline, even without looking at the screen. You can also convert videos to audio so you can practice anywhere.
Sitcoms and podcasts are gold—they’re packed with natural dialogue. I especially recommend sitcoms and stand-up comedy over sci-fi or action films.
Why stand-up? Comedians use language cleverly and densely. The humor depends on wordplay, rhythm, and natural phrasing—perfect for imitation.
Mimicking stand-up performers is a fast way to improve your listening and pick up real, everyday expressions. And it’s fun, so you won’t get bored.
3. Stick to Content in One Language
Make sure the videos or audio you’re using are fully in your target language. Avoid channels mixing your native language and the foreign language—you’ll learn less effectively.
TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms have plenty of native-content creators. Focusing on single-language material helps you immerse fully and strengthens your listening skills faster.
